Marcia Purdie |
|
Marcia was born in Derby 1971 and grew up initially in Halls Creek, then Wyndham. Her father Harold Rivers is Chairperson of Whataguttabe Community, an excision of Lansdowne Station in the East Kimberley, which was originally settled by Rod and Edna Quilty. This land forms the content of many of the artists works. Marcia is married to Dallas Purdie, son of Senior Ochre Artist Shirley Purdie, and Marcia has extended her knowledge of the country and the Ngarrangkarni (Dreaming) stories of her Kitja Elders from both Shirley and Shirleys mother, the legendary Madigan Thomas. Marcia and Dallas and their five children live at Turkey Creek (Warmun Community). Marcia is well educated and has always been involved with Community affairs. She has natural talent nurtured by the Elder Artists, and is fiercely proud of her technique and individual painting style. She is meticulous in method and executes strong works, favouring the thick bush ochre in minimal colours. Marcias first Solo Exhibition was in 2001 - held by Indigenart at Art01. She has participated in many Group Exhibitions with Senior and Contemporary Ochre Artists including:- All that Gija Country - Group educative show by all the artists from Warmun Art Centre, Flinders University Art Museum, Adelaide Work by 4 Emerging Warmun Artists - Mark Nodea, Katie Cox, Marcia Purdie and David Cox, Vivien Anderson Gallery, Melbourne Marcia, Madigan and Mabel, a collection of ochre works by three female artists from different generations of the Warmun art group. Madigan, Mabel and Marcia all paint from differing perspectives in forthright and strong contemporary styles, Woolloongabba Gallery, Brisbane, 2004 In 2005 Indigenous Art on Show in Washington saw Marcias Limited Edition Screenprints and etchings shown alongside those of Eubena Nampitjin, Kathleen Paddoon, Elizabeth Nyumi, Dorothy Napangardi, Shorty Jangala Robertson and Nina Puruntatameri. The Artist is dedicated, her talent already proven and her works can only become even more highly sought after in the marketplace. |
One of the unique skills Artists from the Kimberely region possess is the ability to mix the natural ochre pigments to create truly spectacular colours, shadings and effects that give ochre artworks a uniqueness unseen in any other style of art anywhere in the world.

I received Deanne Peters's work today in the post.
This is the first ever piece of art that I have bought let alone through the Internet.
I love it. I appreciated the opportunity to buy a piece that I work afford within my
budget and I think it is a great idea to produce smaller pieces.
Now I just have to start saving for another.

I received my beautiful Bush Leaves canvas by Jeannie Petyarre last week.
I bought it on a very rushed visit to Kununurra enroute from Warmun to Darwin.
The minute I saw it I knew it was what I had been looking for.
It is at the framers now for stretching onto a frame. I can not wait to hang it in my home.
Thank you so much for getting it to me in such good condition.
I'm so glad I popped into your gallery for what I said would be a "quick walk through.
Luckily my friend in Warmun had said "make sure you go to Artlandish".
Having had the opportunity to spend time in an indigenous community
I feel blessed to have such a beautiful artwork.
Please place me on your mailing list.
Best wishes
Sue
